Introducing yourDust Mate

A Practical solution to reduce the dust entering your Caravan while traveling on dirt roads

Get your Dust Mate now and spend less time cleaning and more time relaxing on your next outback trip.

How it works

When towing your caravan along a dirt road, a vacuum is created inside your van which sucks dust in through any vents or unsealed gaps. The Dust Mate is simply designed to pump filtered air into the caravan to prevent the formation of a vacuum and therefore drastically reducing the inflow of dust.

I cannot guarantee that it will stop all the dust.  I am not aware of any similar systems on the market that do, but it will certainly allow you to enjoy traveling on dirt roads without the nagging worry of pulling up to find your entire internal living area of your van covered in a layer of dust.

The fact is, most caravans on the market today have an inherent dust problem when travelling on dusty roads due to the number of vents needed to comply with the Australian Standards in relation to internal gas hazards. The Dust Mate with its constant flow filtered system helps to almost eliminate this problem.

The retail price of the Dust Mate is $975 + $50 for postage, packaging and handling.

Dust Mate fitted to a caravan.

Internal components of the Dust Mate.

More Information

The system is installed on your caravan roof in a heavy duty 3mm aluminium powder coated housing (52cm L x 30cm W x 19cm H).  In most cases it will not compromise the overall height as it should not be any higher than the roof top air conditioner.

The Dust Mate is designed to be fitted in any orientation depending on the position of other components on the roof or internal ceiling.

The system only requires a 120mm diameter hole to be cut in the top layer of the roof and directly below that a 102mm diameter hole cut in the ceiling layer of the roof.

The internal vent is 125mm x 125mm and sits flat against the ceiling and protrudes out about 8mm. A 100mm tube on the back of the vent fits firmly inside a heavy duty 100mm rubber tube that protrudes out of the bottom of the Dust Mate providing unrestricted airflow.

The Dust Mate only needs to operate when you are travelling on an unsealed road.

In most cases if you are a practical DIY type person you could possibly install the Dust Mate yourself, otherwise a caravan maintenance provider will be able to help.

The conditions you are travelling in will determine how often the air filter needs to be cleaned.  In most cases you can travel over 5,000 km on dusty unsealed roads before the filter will not need cleaning. However, if you are travelling where there is constant thick bull dust blowing up over the top of the caravan it will need cleaning more regularly.

For the best performance, there is also a requirement to seal existing gaps in areas where dust may enter the van (other than existing vents).

The Dust Mate system comes complete with:

  • A comprehensive installation, operating and maintenance guide.
  • A fuse holder with fuse, a waterproof switch and 5 metres of 12v wire (When in operation the system only draws 4.3 amps).
  • A tube of Selleys 650 adhesive to attach the system to the van roof.  This ensures the weather proofing of roof structure is not compromised.
  • A tube of silastic to waterproof the completed installation.
  • An internal vent.
  • A two-year warranty + a fifteen-year structural guarantee on the aluminium housing.
  • My personal practical support for any questions or advice.

About Me

My name is Gerry Dowling and I am the manager of our family business which manufactures the Dust Mate. Having travelled extensively throughout Australia over the past thirty years, I have first-hand experience on what it feels like to park up for the night at a great camping spot only to find your entire internal living area covered in a layer of dust.

I designed the Dust Mate to be economical, lightweight, compact, streamlined and robust enough to easily handle the tough Australian conditions.

Testimonials

This system has been an absolute life-saver and we highly recommend it to all who ask. Such an easy system to install and we DO NOT have an ounce of dust in our van.   S D. West Wadonga. VIC

After looking around at various DRS (Dust Reduction Systems) options, I found the Dust Mate system was the unit that would most suit my needs.  It only needs a small hole in the roof, which means it can fit almost anywhere. The fitting instructions provided made installation a breeze. We have just recently had the opportunity to test it out and I must say my wife was very happy and I was impressed with the Dust Mate from the minute it arrived. S W Condobolin NSW (July 2024)

I think I've installed around six Dust Mates now and all the customers I've spoken to absolutely love them. They're easy to install and by only cutting a 120 mm hole in the roof, it's less likely to compromise the structure of the roof.  Also have had one customer wanting to have an in-vehicle switch which was pretty simple to install via a relay.  Shane - Bannockburn Caravan and Trailer Repairs Melbourne (July 2024)

After an outback trip in 2021 in our 19ft 6inch offroad caravan, we were unhappy with the amount of dust that was being drawn in through the door and vents. After much research, we found the Dust Mate, which offered a very reasonably priced solution for us. Since purchasing one in 2022, we are highly impressed with the air capacity it provides to keep our van largely free of dust on dirt roads. We found the DIY installation instructions to be clear and concise and had no problems setting it up on our van.  We would highly recommend the Dust Mate.  D & M Farquhar Capella QLD (August 2024)
